heat protection for hair and heat styling tips

You want a smokin' look, not scorched locks! Nathaniel Hawkins, TRESemmé's Lead Stylist, knows exactly what you need. Follow these tips to get gorgeous styles without damaging your hair.

the hair "Dos"

- After shampooing your hair, always use conditioner. Heat styling can zap your hair of moisture, so conditioning is crucial. Be sure to rinse the conditioner well – otherwise, it can cause product buildup that will prevent you from getting the style you want.
- Spray your entire head liberally with Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Protective Spray before blow-drying to prep your hair. Then blow-dry your hair 80% dry using just your fingers; finish drying with a round brush for a smoother texture.
- Blow-dry your hair pointing the nozzle of the dryer toward the ends of your hair. This smoothes the cuticle and prevents tangles.
- After blow-drying your hair, blast it with cool air for one minute to set the style and give it shine.
- Use a high-quality ceramic straightening or curling iron to style your hair. Ceramic tools are much gentler on the hair than metal and will give you a smoother, softer finish.

the hair "Don'ts"

- Don’t neglect your ends when applying heat protective products. Your ends are most susceptible to damage and drying, so pay special attention to them.
- Don’t try to style wet hair with a straightening or curling iron. Always blow-dry or air-dry your hair completely before using an iron. Wet hair is especially delicate, and direct heat can cause breakage.
- Don’t hold the nozzle of the blow dryer in the same place on your hair for longer than five seconds – move  the dryer constantly to prevent overheating your hair.
- Don’t be afraid to try any style you can dream up with the right tools and products to protect your hair from damage!
