The Twisted Punk Braid Autumn/Winter 2016

Designer Lubov Azria added a punk twist to classic Hervé Léger bodycon shapes for New York Fashion Week autumn/winter 2016, so what better hairstyle to send models down the runway with than a look we like to call The Twisted Punk Braid?

This imperfect punky plait with tumbling natural texture is an easy way to get an punk-inspired 'do without any long-term commitment – and we love its subtle romance, too. With one side twisted tightly along the length of the head, and the other left in loose waves, it’s a structured-meets-soft style that perfectly echoed the edgy yet feminine details – think studs, frayed edges, rivets and eyelets – in the Hervé Léger AW16 collection. A statement-making hairstyle for a standout show? We think so.

TRESemmé New York Fashion Week Ambassador Orlando Pita describes The Twisted Punk Braid as the perfect look for women to wear to "channel their inner tomboy," making it a great choice for casual street style too. And if you want a more elegant look for the office, wear a double French braid by day, then simply let one side out to create a similar asymmetric style that will turn heads when you’re off-duty.

Since no punk wants to look polished, the TRESemmé Botanique range is the ideal collection for creating wavy texture that doesn’t look too try-hard. Get this gorgeously grungy look in six simple steps below.

  • 01
A model with long, dark wavy hair in a parting and someone styling it with a hair brush

    STEP 1:

Prepare hair with TRESemmé Botanique Nourish and Replenish shampoo and conditioner – these moisturising products won’t weigh your hair down and will prep your tresses perfectly for styling.

Someone's hands fastening a model's long, dark wavy hair into tight braids

    STEP 2:

Create a rough deep side part (remember: precision doesn't matter here!), then start your twisted side braid. You’ll want to plait and twist from your forehead to the nape of your neck, keeping your twists nice and tight for a braid that sits close to the head.

    STEP 3:

Secure the braid at the bottom with a small elastic and pin at the neck.

  • 04
A model with her hair up in a clasp and a stylist applying curling tongs to a section of it

    STEP 4:

If your hair isn’t naturally wavy, make waves in the rest of the hair using a curling tong, letting them fall over one shoulder and down your back, concealing the end of your braid.

Finish with a spritz of TRESemmé Firm Hold Styling Hair spray for touchable hold.

Ready to plait your way to a cool, casual look with the Twisted Punk Braid? Now all you need is the ultimate accessory: attitude.
