Our products may contain animal-derived ingredients from normal sustainable animal husbandry or farming or fishery practices such as milk, honey, lanolin, silk etc. Products may also contain processed and denatured animal by products with established uses such as tallow, keratin, collagen, elastin etc. In most cases, this is because the ingredient performs a function for which there is no suitable alternative available. Animal welfare is an important social and ethical issue. As part of our Sustainable Agricultural Code, we work with suppliers to continuously improve the sourcing of agricultural ingredients.
TRESemmé is committed to eliminating animal testing across the business. Since the 1980s, TRESemmé has remained at the forefront of research into non-animal approaches to assess product safety and advocates effective, science-based regulation on alternatives to animal testing that ensure consumer safety and facilitate innovation.
TRESemmé scientists play a leading role internationally, working with key academic, government and NGO scientists to lead the development and application of non-animal tested approaches for assessing consumer safety. Where we are legally obliged to commission animal studies, we ensure a minimal number of animals are used.
No animal testing is carried out in our own laboratories. In countries where local authorities test our products on animals, we are working with government scientists to help implement non animal-based methods.

We do not use formaldehyde in our products. We do use formaldehyde donors such as DMDM hydantoin in some of our shampoos and conditioners. Formaldehyde donors release low levels of formaldehyde throughout the shelf-life of a product, which protect the product from spoiling. Formaldehyde is a natural substance which is present in food and produced within our bodies, and the low levels present in our products are well within safe and regulated levels. This has been confirmed by regulators and scientists around the world.
DMDM hydantoin is used in some of our products around the world and it’s a widely used ingredient in the beauty industry. DMDM hydantoin is a formaldehyde donor and it is an important ingredient because it helps protect the product from spoiling. Formaldehyde is a natural substance which is present in food and produced within our bodies. Health authorities and regulators around the world agree that DMDM hydantoin is safe at the levels found in our products, this includes the US Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel and Europe’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety.
While DMDM hydantoin is safe to use, we understand that some people prefer to use a hair care product which does not contain this particular ingredient. To respond to this growing preference, and as part of our usual on-going formulation changes, in the UKI we began removing DMDM hydantoin from our TRESemmé products some time ago and replaced it with an alternative ingredient. As a result most TRESemmé products on the market in the UKI do not contain DMDM hydantoin.
We understand that hair loss can be an incredibly distressing experience. It can occur for several reasons including hormonal changes, stress, genetic makeup, pregnancy, serious illness, medication, diet, and certain hair styling techniques.
There is no evidence to suggest that DMDM hydantoin - an ingredient widely used in the beauty industry - causes hair loss. Our team of scientific experts rigorously screens each and every ingredient before it goes into our formulations. If we have any concerns or doubts about an ingredient, then we won’t use it in our products. As with any topical product, some people may experience sensitivities to the ingredients used, natural or otherwise. If you are experiencing an adverse reaction, please stop using the product and consult your doctor.
