It’s our favorite time of year: New York Fashion Week! To keep your look low-key and glamorous at home, we have the wavy hairstyle how-to step-by-step straight from the igloo-covered runway at Rebecca Minkoff’s NYFW 2021 socially distant fashion show.
Inspired by the effortless aura of New York City ‘It’ girls, this Free Spirited Wave look is a timeless style that’s also incredibly versatile, which is especially important during the uncertain times of today.
In homage to the bohemian-chic hairstyles of the 1970s, this style is a modern approach to a classic look you can rock on any virtual work meetings, socially distant hangs, or our preferred reason: just because! We’re all living in varying states of open and closed states, and this style is a flexible and all-purpose look that’s both lived-in and as TRESemmé stylist Tyler Laswell describes it: “gorgeously undone.”

1. Starting at the nape, section off a medium-sized portion of hair just above the base hairline and gather the rest into a horseshoe topknot.
2. Dampen sectioned hair with a mist of water and then apply the Volume Thickening Spray from roots to ends.
3. Lift sectioned hair straight up, tightening roots against the back of the head while blowdrying. Repeat steps 1-3, working up and then around the head.
4. Generously spritz Dry Texture Finishing Spray throughout the hair after blowdrying and then lightly tease strands section-by-section, working from ends to roots.
5. Create soft waves by using a 1-inch curling iron. Start at the root, wrap sectioned hair twice around the barrel, hold for a few seconds, release and move down the strand, and then wrap in the opposite direction. Continue this rotation until the full strand is completed and repeat throughout the rest of the head.
6. Lightly tease the crown to add volume behind the head. Finish mid-shafts and ends of hair with the Keratin Smooth Shine Serum to add subtle shine.
7. Finish the look with Compressed MicroMist Hair Spray Boost Level 3.
