How To Do A Messy Bun
The messy bun is one of those hairstyles that go with any look and it continues to be iconic in the fashion industry. The best part about this hairstyle is that it doesn't require a huge amount of effort or skill. Favoured by those who like their locks to be styled in a matter of minutes (hey, no judgement here!), this easy updo is a great solution for day-old hair. And from supermodels to bloggers, it seems everyone is a fan.
So, how do you create this effortlessly chic look? We asked Tyler Laswell, TRESemmé New York Fashion Week stylist, to take us through the process step-by-step. Just follow the five easy tips below to perfect your top knot skills.
Step 1: Start by prepping your hair. You want to be working with hair that has a bit of texture, so if yours is freshly washed, you’ll need to add product for added grip. We recommend that you use TRESemmé Volume and Lift Extra Body Mousse – it provides superior, natural-looking volume to leave your hair smooth, shiny and with no fly-aways insight. If you have oily hair, it is crucial that you wash your hair before styling. The last thing you want is for your hair to look greasy while rocking this look. Use a shampoo for oily hair
Step 2: Create a ponytail and position it high on your head. Tip: follow the line of your cheekbones for the best placement. Once you secure your ponytail, add the mousse to your lengths, avoiding the hair on your scalp. Rough dry the mousse into your pony with a blow dryer, using your fingers to tease it to create volume and texture. You can also use a teasing comb to gently backcomb if needed.
Step 3: Take the ponytail and wrap it loosely around the base, pinning and teasing as you go.
Step 4: Tuck the end under the bun and tease out some extra curls and waves to frame your face for a soft finish.
Step 5: For added control, use an extra light spray such as the TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shine Oil to set the look in place while maintaining your perfectly undone ‘do. It’s non-greasy and is designed to give you a perfectly polished look.
Et voilà! An effortlessly chic top knot to master for day or night. As Happily Grey blogger Mary Seng says, "They’re fresh and young. Wear it in the day, casually, with ripped denim, and you can switch into your little black dress for the night." A girl after our own heart, indeed.
