Genius hacks to get salon-like hair at home

There really is nothing like that ultra-clean feeling of a salon hair wash and the silkiness of a really great blow-dry. But what if you could recreate that straight-out-of-the-salon look and feeling at home?

Here are our favourite tricks to help you do just that to revel in the salon-fresh feeling all the time.

 

Nail the hair wash

A solid foundation for cleaning and styling your hair starts in the shower. Having a good quality shampoo and conditioner not only restores hair health, but also manage concerns like dullness, frizz, flatness or oil control. Look for a shampoo and conditioner that contains vitamins and oils to nourish your hair, which can also help withstand the damage from heat or styling.

When it comes to giving your hair a really good-quality wash, the key is to take your time and massage the roots well in a circular motion to ensure you remove all product build-up and grease.

When you're sitting in the chair, watching your stylist blow dry your hair it can seem like a really difficult thing to recreate. But fear not, we spoke to Sydney based stylist Cara Clyne on how you can learn to do this from the comfort of your own bathroom.

"Practice with your hairdryer turned off, then using a round brush pretend you're blow-drying in front of the mirror," explains Clyne.

Next, blow-dry hair until it's around 70 per cent dry before using a round brush to start working through small sections, smoothing them out.

"For the front of your hair, always wrap the hair around the brush and lift it up in the air. Blow-drying in this position will give maximum fullness and shape the face beautifully," Clyne says. "And if you find using a round brush is too hard, try a hot hair brush."

When you've gone to all the effort of giving yourself the perfect blow-dry, you'll definitely want to enjoy it for as many days as possible, so make sure you have the right tools on hand to really nail salon-style looks from home.

After using your heat tools, let the hair cool down until it's warm to the touch. Then, use a mist of hairspray to keep the style in shape.

When you notice oil build-up from your scalp as the days go on, dry shampoo will help maintain your look whilst giving your hair a lot of airiness and movement. Simply mist roots from around 15 centimetres away, gently ruffling it through with your fingertips.

You could even consider sleeping with a silk pillowcase which can help minimise static on your freshly blow-dried style.
